Harassment Victim Sues AI Company Over Chatbot’s Role in Escalating Stalking Behavior

A California woman has filed a lawsuit against a major artificial intelligence company, alleging that its conversational AI system facilitated and amplified her ex-boyfriend’s harassment campaign against her. The case highlights growing concerns about the potential dangers of AI chatbots when used by individuals experiencing mental health crises.

The lawsuit, filed in San Francisco County Superior Court, describes how a 53-year-old technology entrepreneur developed increasingly erratic beliefs after extensive interactions with the AI system. According to court documents, the man became convinced he had developed a revolutionary medical treatment and that he was under surveillance by powerful entities.

The plaintiff, identified as Jane Doe to protect her privacy, is seeking punitive damages and has requested a temporary restraining order. She wants the court to compel the AI company to permanently block the user’s access, prevent him from creating new accounts, alert her if he attempts to use the service, and preserve all conversation records for legal proceedings.

While the company has agreed to suspend the user’s account, it has reportedly refused other requests, according to Doe’s legal team. Her attorneys claim the organization is withholding information about specific threats the user may have discussed with the AI system.

Pattern of Escalating Behavior

Despite this warning, a human reviewer reportedly restored his access the following day, even though his conversations may have contained evidence of real-world stalking and targeting behavior.

Multiple Warning Signs Ignored

Screenshots referenced in the lawsuit show conversation titles that included disturbing phrases such as “violence list expansion” and “fetal suffocation calculation.” When the user’s premium subscription wasn’t restored along with his account access, he sent increasingly frantic emails to the company’s safety team, copying Doe on the messages.

These communications contained urgent, disorganized language and grandiose claims about writing hundreds of scientific papers at an impossible pace. The emails included lists of AI-generated documents with provocative titles covering various controversial topics.

In November, Doe submitted a formal abuse report to the company, describing seven months of technology-enabled harassment that would have been “impossible otherwise.” The company acknowledged the report as “extremely serious and troubling” but provided no further communication.

Legal Consequences and Broader Implications

The harassment continued over the following months, culminating in threatening voicemails that led to the man’s arrest in January on felony charges including communicating bomb threats and assault with a deadly weapon. He was subsequently found incompetent to stand trial and committed to a mental health facility, though legal procedural issues may lead to his release.
