Royal Duke Faces Defamation Lawsuit from African Children’s Charity He Established

A prominent member of the British royal family is facing legal action from Sentebale, the African children’s charity he helped establish, marking a dramatic escalation in an ongoing dispute that has captured public attention.

The organization has filed defamation proceedings in London’s High Court, naming the Duke and former trustee Mark Dyer as defendants in what represents the latest chapter of a bitter conflict following the royal’s departure as patron.

The legal battle stems from a public disagreement between the Duke and the charity’s chairwoman, Dr Sophie Chandauka, which erupted after his resignation from the patronage role last year.

Charity’s Mission and Leadership Changes

Sentebale focuses on supporting vulnerable children and young people across southern Africa. The Duke, alongside co-founder Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, stepped away from their roles in March 2025. Subsequently, several trustees resigned amid tensions with Chandauka, a legal professional who joined the organization’s leadership in 2023.

According to the charity’s statement, the legal action follows what they describe as a sustained negative media campaign that began on March 25, 2025, causing significant operational disruption and damage to the organization’s reputation.

Allegations and Counter-Claims

The charity alleges that the Duke and Dyer orchestrated a coordinated media campaign that went viral and triggered widespread online harassment directed at the organization and its leadership team. Sentebale claims this campaign involved spreading false information about the charity and its management while attempting to damage relationships with staff and partners.

The organization emphasized that external funding covers all legal costs, ensuring no charitable resources are diverted from their core mission of serving vulnerable communities.

Representatives for the Duke and Dyer have strongly rejected these allegations, describing them as both offensive and damaging. They expressed dismay that charitable funds might be used to pursue legal action against individuals who dedicated nearly two decades to building and supporting the organization.

Regulatory Scrutiny

In August 2025, the Charity Commission issued criticism regarding how the dispute was handled publicly, though it cleared the Duke of racism allegations. The regulatory body found fault with all parties for allowing internal disagreements to become a public spectacle, noting this approach severely damaged the charity’s reputation and potentially undermined broader public confidence in charitable organizations.

The commission’s investigation revealed that tensions escalated following the development of a new fundraising strategy focused on the United States market.

Personal Stakes and Public Impact

Chandauka has characterized the dispute as highlighting issues of governance, management practices, and discrimination. She described facing targeting from those who, in her words, play victim while she attempted to address organizational concerns.

The Duke’s representatives criticized the regulatory report as inadequate, noting that no evidence supported allegations of widespread harassment or discrimination within the charity. They emphasized the personal significance of Sentebale to the Duke, who established the organization as a tribute to his late mother’s humanitarian legacy.

The case highlights the complex challenges facing high-profile charitable organizations when internal disputes spill into public view, potentially affecting their ability to serve the vulnerable populations they were created to help.
